در شهریور ۱۴۰۱ (سپتامبر ۲۰۲۲)، شرکت آمریکایی ای‌اس‌تی اسپیس موبایل، ماهواره‌ای غول‌پیکر به نام BlueWalker 3 را برفراز موشک فالکون ۹ اسپیس ایکس به فضا پرتاب کرد. بلوواکر ۳ نمونه‌ی اولیه‌ای از یک ماهواره‌ی مخابراتی است که می‌تواند اینترنت ماهواره‌ای را به‌طور مستقیم، بدون نیاز به هیچ‌گونه تغییر در سخت‌افزار، برای گوشی‌های همراه معمولی ارسال کند.
اینترنت ماهواره ای بلو واکر
تبدیل گوشی‌های همراه معمولی به تلفن ماهواره‌ای به لطف آنتن عظیمی به اندازه‌ی ۶۴ متر مربع امکان‌پذیر می‌شود. این بزرگ‌ترین آنتن تجاری به‌شمار می‌آید که تاکنون در مدار نزدیک زمین مستقر شده است؛ درنتیجه جای تعجب نیست که براساس مطالعه‌ای جدید، بلوواکر ۳ اکنون یکی از درخشان‌ترین اجرام آسمان است.

بسته به میزان تاریکی آسمان و مکان حضورمان، چند هزار ستاره با چشم غیرمسلح مشاهده‌پذیر هستند. ماهواره‌ی بلوواکر ۳ به‌طور طبیعی روشن نیست و آنچه از آن می‌بینیم، نور بازتابیده از خورشید به زمین است. این ماهواره در زاویه‌ی مناسب قدر ۰٫۴ را دارد و با این مقدار، در میان ۱۵ جرم درخشان آسمان قرار می‌گیرد. بلوواکر ۳ حتی از ستاره ابط‌الجوزا یا زحل روشن‌تر است.
پیرو بنونوتی، مدیر مرکز حفاظت از آسمان در اتحادیه بین‌المللی نجوم، نوامبر گذشته در بیانیه‌ای گفت: «بلوواکر ۳ تغییری بزرگ در منظومه‌های ماهواره‌ای محسوب می‌شود و باید موجب تامل ما شود.»
مشکل فقط خود ماهواره نیست. حتی رابط اتصال بلوواکر ۳ به مرحله‌ی فوقانی موشک نیز چهار برابر روشن‌تر از دستورالعمل‌های اتحادیه بین‌المللی نجوم برای اجرام بود. از زمانی که اسپیس ایکس ساخت ابرمنظومه‌ی ماهواره‌ای خود به نام استارلینک را آغاز کرده است، ماهواره‌های بسیار روشن این شرکت رگه‌هایی از نور را در تصاویر نجومی به جا گذاشته‌اند.
افزایش چشمگیر شماره ماهواره‌ها در سال‌های اخیر، آلودگی نوری را به طرز گسترده افزایش داده است. ازدست‌رفتن دسترسی به آسمان شب، آن‌قدر برای اخترشناسان ناراحت‌کننده بوده است که آن‌ها اصطلاح جدیدی را برای توصیف درد ناشی از این فقدان ابداع کرده‌اند: نوکتالوژی به معنای غم آسمان.
